Doyle Jacobs Advisory Group

Doyle Jacobs Advisory Group believes deeply in providing valuable service and advice to clients. These principles are the foundation of the client experience for our team.

T.I.P.S. - The Intelligent Portfolio Solution

This book is a compilation of the author’s lessons of a life spent studying the alchemy of finance in his book “T.I.P.S. The Intelligent Portfolio Solution”. These principles are the foundation of the client experience at Brady Doyle Advisory Group.

T.I.P.S. - The Intelligent Portfolio Solution

First and foremost know yourself. My years in Wall Street and business, in fact, became one long course in human nature. How to balance the nature of things in this world in which we live with the nature of mankind, quoting Bernard Baruch from his book, My Story. There's an expression attributed to Warren Buffett regarding the game of poker. That applies to many zero-sum games. It goes like this, if you've been in the game for 20 minutes and you don't know who the patsy is, it's you. Like poker, trading in the stock market is a zero-sum game. Every trade has both a winner and a loser, but trading is not investing. Investing as Ben Graham once defined it is the undertaking of thorough research and analysis that provides one, an assurance of principle and two, an adequate return - everything else is speculation. The primary rule of the investment advisor is know your client. The problem is that very few clients know themselves. A lack of self-knowledge is a primary obstacle to achieving investment success and Ben Graham reminds us that the biggest obstacles to investment success are often the investors themselves. It's rare for individuals to be objective in measuring their own investment performance. To do so would necessarily require an articulated investment policy and an appropriately defined benchmark for making performance comparisons.

Without that benchmark, it's nearly impossible to make an objective investment, an objective assessment of one's role as an investor, so the same mistakes keep being repeated. The results of self-directed investments are generally abysmal. This type of misdirected activity is a monumental destroyer of capital, opportunity, and in many cases hopes, dreams and lives. The statistical results for the self-directed investor are a destruction of capital at an average rate of 6 percent annually compared to the market returns, according to Dalbar. Wall Street is littered with the failed careers of people who, on the whole, were very well-prepared to achieve investment success. They had the right sort of education and plenty of experience, intelligence and contacts. They were prepared in every way except for one thing, temperament. Statistical analysis indicates that between 80 and 90 percent of investment professionals do not add value to the process. They consistently underperform their benchmarks over time. Key takeaway. Obviously, only one in 10 people can be in the top 10 percent. If you believe you're one of the lucky ones, examine yourself against an objective measure. If you think you might be one of the less fortunate majority, don't try to make investments yourself, investment decisions yourself. Seek professional help.
